The Calgary Jazz Orchestra Society is proud to be a host celebration site for the 2019 Alberta Culture Days. All the events listed below are FREE to the public of all ages to attend, enjoy, learn and interact with the CJO musicians.

7:00-8:00 pm - Rhythm Section Master Class with the Calgary Jazz Orchestra

Have you ever wondered what goes through the mind of the rhythm section as they practice, perform, improvise, and run their music business? We want to welcome music enthusiasts and musicians of any skill level to an interactive behind-the-scenes experience with the CJO's rhythm section. The rhythm section will demonstrate how they navigate through the music, answer questions from the public and offer technique advice and other recommendations to improve the musicianship of those in the room.
This workshop will feature Master musicians and CJO members Egor Ukoloff, Neil McVey, Kodi Hutchinson, and Jim Johnston. 

Egor Ukoloff is originally from Russia and is a graduate of Rostov-on-Don Music College and Rostov-on-on State Conservatory. Egor is one of Canada's top and busiest jazz pianists. 
Neil McVey is a regular jazz guitarist in a number of Calgary bands. He teaches at Ambrose University. 
Kodi Hutchinson is a sought-after sideman on the double bass and the electric bass. His versatility and passion for music are evidenced by his work with his own musical group, the Hutchinson Andrew Trio, his CKUA radio show A Time for Jazz, and his record label, Chronograph Records. In 2013, the Hutchinson Andrew Trio won the prestigious TD Grand Jazz Award at the Montreal International Jazz Festival. 
Jim Johnston is a graduate of Humber College’s performance program. A highly versatile drummer, Jim has worked with both cover and original projects, from folk, country, jazz, RnB, hip-hop, big band, blues, reggae, Celtic and African. Though Jim loves the performance aspect of music, he also imparts his love of the craft through his teaching.

8:20-9:20 pm - A Night of Standards with the Calgary Jazz Orchestra Rhythm section

An exciting Friday night concert with your Calgary Jazz Orchestra’s Rhythm Section open to all ages. The quartet will perform their favourite Jazz standards and feature the music of Canadian Jazz pianist and legend, Oscar Peterson.
The quartet will involve the talented Egor Ukoloff, Neil McVey, Kodi Hutchinson, Jim Johnston.

10:00-11:00 am - Disney & Traditional Jazz Dance Party for Kids

What can possibly be better than a traditional Jazz Dance Party to your favourite Disney classics and Children’s music!! Tell your friends and bring the whole family down, this is an event you will not want to miss. Disney favourites and Children’s music will be performed in the traditional Jazz style with piano, bass, drums, saxophone, and trumpet. The quintet will create the ultimate Jazz Dance Party for kids and kids at heart of all ages! 

The CJO musicians who will be performing for you are CJO artistic director, trumpet player and vocalist Johnny Summers, professional saxophonist and music educator Richard Harding, master jazz pianist Egor Ukoloff, award-winning bassist Kodi Hutchinson, and outstanding drummer Jim Johnston.

11:15am-12:45 pm - Long & McQuade Instrument Petting Zoo (for all ages)
Calgary music retailer Long and McQuade have donated time and resources to bring instruments for the public to hold and play in the lobby. The experience of holding an instrument, and learning how to make a sound is engaging and authentic. It will give the opportunity for aspiring musicians to learn more about the instruments and give those who appreciate music a higher level of awareness of what the musicians are experiencing when they perform. This is a wonderful interactive hands-on activity for all ages.

1:00-2:00 pm - Saxophone Master class
Have you ever wondered what goes through the mind of the saxophone section as they practice, perform, improvise, and run their music business?  We want to welcome music enthusiasts and saxophonists of any skill level to an interactive masterclass with Jeremy Brown and Eric Friedenburg, two of the CJO’s saxophonists. They will perform some Jazz excerpts, answer questions from the public and offer technique advice and other recommendations to improve the musicianship of those in the room. Interactive masterclass, bring your instrument if you'd like!

Dr. Jeremy Brown is a conductor, saxophonist, woodwind artist, lecturer, author, and professor of Music, as well as former head of the Music department at the University of Calgary. Dr. Brown has lectured internationally and is the author of the book The Wind Band of Henry Cowell, published in 2018. He conducts the Calgary Wind Symphony and the University of Calgary wind and jazz bands.

In addition to being one of Calgary's most accomplished flute and saxophone players, Eric Friedenberg is an arranger, composer, and musical director. He has also taught at the University of Calgary and at the Conservatory of Mount Royal University. Eric has also served as arranger, conductor and musical director for various TV shows and special events.

2:30-3:30 pm - CJO Saxophone Concert
Join us for an uplifting afternoon filled with alto and tenor saxophones featuring two of the CJO’s saxophonists. 
Dr. Jeremy Brown has been instrumental in music Education for many players in the city and has a deep, soulful sound filled with emotion. Eric Friedenberg is an accomplished saxophone player with extensive experience as an arranger, composer, and musical director. 
This duo will be accompanied by members of the CJO rhythm section, Jon Day, Kodi Hutchinson and Jim Johnston. Together, they will perform a variety of music styles from their favourite composers. All ages concert.

4:00-5:00 pm - Brass Master Class with the Calgary Jazz Orchestra
Have you ever wondered what goes through the mind of brass players as they practice, perform, improvise, and run their music business? We want to welcome music enthusiasts and brass players of any skill level to an interactive masterclass with CJO’s Jay Michalak on trumpet and Michael Callander on trombone. They will perform, answer questions from the public and offer technique advice and other recommendations to improve the musicianship of those in the room. Interactive masterclass, bring your instrument if you'd like!
Jay Michalak is one of Canada’s leading trumpeters. Jay is a regular performer with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, the Calgary Jazz Orchestra, and the Johnny Summers Little Big Band. 
Michael Callander plays with many jazz groups including Jim Hutchison Jazz Works. He has performed with a wide range of artists. His recording portfolio includes Humber College’s Midnight Sun album in 2017 on which he is featured as a soloist.

7:00-8:30 pm - Calgary Jazz Orchestra Concert
We are wrapping up our Culture Days program with an exhilarating concert featuring the 17-piece Calgary Jazz Orchestra, directed by Johnny Summers. We invite everyone to join us and your CJO for a rich musical experience as they are taken in sound from traditional jazz, modern, pop, funk, soul, and New Orleans music. Johnny and the CJO will make this a spectacular, fun, and educational performance. They will explain in an engaging and interactive way of how music has been influenced through time, culture and geography. All ages concert.
